Why Am I So Sore and Tired After Every Workout?

If you're sore for days after every workout, or so wiped out that you skip the next one, the workout is the easy thing to blame. Workout recovery depends on much more than the class itself: how you're sleeping, what you're eating, how your days are set up, and what you're carrying in your head. When those pieces don't line up, even a reasonable workout feels like too much.

Sore from too much, or stiff from too little

The people who come to us about this land in one of two places. Some are super sore because they're doing a lot and not recovering from it. Others are stiff and sore because they stopped moving. They got overwhelmed trying to find a routine that works for their life, so they aren't doing anything at all. Plenty of them are tired, nursing an injury, or both.

Both feel like failing from the inside, and neither one is. If you're stretching every day and still feel locked up, that's part of the same picture (tight often means overworked, not short).

What we look at when workout recovery stalls

When you come in, we want to know about your actual day. We ask about your routine, your schedule, when you train, and where the block is. Sometimes it's time. Sometimes it's energy. Sometimes it's pain that makes you nervous to push.

We look at mindset too. The all-or-nothing voice that says one missed morning undoes everything keeps a lot of people from moving at all. It doesn't undo anything.

Are you eating enough to recover from your workouts?

This is a big one, and it's where the nutrition side of our practice does a lot of the work. Protein gets most of the attention right now, and it is part of the picture. But what about your fruits, vegetables, and fiber? Are you eating enough, period?

Most people aren't. CDC data puts it at about one in ten adults meeting vegetable recommendations. Fiber is flagged in the Dietary Guidelines as a nutrient most Americans fall short on. In our office, we see under-eating most in women.

Once the basics are covered, we look at meal timing and hydration. Food is a huge part of recovery, and it's the piece most people never connect to why they're still sore.

If you're always sore, look at your plate before you look at your program.

That's why nutrition lives inside the same care here, with Jay, our registered dietitian. It isn't something you have to go find somewhere else.

Knowing when to push and when to recover

There is a time to push through and a time to recover. The trick is knowing yourself well enough to tell which one your body needs today. That's harder than it sounds when you're tired, sore, and second-guessing everything.

This is part of what regular care does for our patients. The more you get adjusted, the easier it is to feel the signals your body is sending, and the easier it gets to listen to them. It's a big reason our chiropractic for active adults looks at the whole person and not just the sore spot.

A quick check before your next workout

This is the check we use for the early-alarm decision. Before you get out of bed, ask yourself one thing: how did I sleep?

  • Rough night, or up more than once? Take the sleep, or go and keep it easy.
  • Slept fine and just don't feel like it? That's the morning to go.

Keeping it easy isn't skipping it:

  • Keep the warm-up and the part you came for, and drop the finisher.
  • Swap the run for a walk outside.
  • Leave class a little early.
  • Do the mobility work you keep saving for later.

The workout you can repeat next week does more for you than the one that leaves you wrecked tomorrow.

Who this check is for

It's for the everyday call between sleep and the alarm. Skip it if you're sore enough that you're worried about getting hurt. Skip it too if you're wiped out no matter how much you sleep, or exhausted even though you eat well and exercise. Those are worth a closer look first.
