Should You Work Out When You're Stressed?

Yes, you can work out when you're stressed, and moving your body is one of the best things you can do on a hard week. What changes is the intensity. When work, sleep, and food are already taking a toll, the hard class can be the thing that tips you over. You feel it the next day: stiff when you wake up, tight by 3pm, exhausted but wired at bedtime.

That's the short answer. Here's how to tell which kind of week you're in, and what to do about it.

"I'm doing all the right things"

We hear this in our Dublin office every week. It comes from people who train hard, eat well, and still feel stiff after working out. They aren't wrong. They really are doing the right things, and the workouts, the meal prep, and the stretching all make sense.

When we ask what the week has looked like, we hear about a big deadline, a few short nights, and the same hard classes they'd take on a calm week. The workout didn't change, but everything around it did.

Why stress makes workout recovery harder

Stress is stress. A deadline, a short night, a skipped lunch, and a hard class all go in the same bucket. Your body doesn't sort them into work stress and gym stress. It has to recover from all of it.

On a calm week, there's room in the bucket and the hard class fits. On a week with a big deadline and short nights, that same class is what makes it spill over. The next morning you're stiff, sore for days after a workout you'd normally bounce back from, and wondering what happened to your fitness.

Your fitness didn't slip. The bucket was already full.

Research lines up with what we see in the office. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that people under more chronic stress recovered their strength more slowly after the same workout, and felt sore and fatigued for longer, than people under less stress.

The 30-second check before a hard workout

This is the check we'd have you use on your next heavy week. Before a hard workout, ask yourself:

  • How did I sleep last night?
  • Have I eaten real food today?
  • How heavy has work been this week?

What to do with your answers

  • All good: go for it.
  • One rough: keep the class, lower the intensity.
  • Two or three rough: walk, do an easy flow, or rest.

It doesn't need to be perfect. The point is to look at the whole week before you decide how hard to push. Adjusting on a heavy week is how you keep training for years.

This check is for you if you train regularly and some weeks leave you stiff and wrecked. If you're dealing with an injury, or pain, numbness, or tingling running down an arm or leg, skip the check and get that looked at first.

When every week feels like a heavy one

Some seasons there's no calm week in sight, and the stiffness stops lining up with any one workout. That's when people come to see us, and most expect us to hand them a new routine on day one. We don't.

The first step is showing up. Consistent chiropractic visits give your body a chance to come down after holding everything so tight for so long. When you've been bracing through hard week after hard week, your body can forget what letting go feels like, and no amount of good habits gets through that on its own.

Once your body isn't wound tight all the time, we talk about what to change beyond that, like sleep, training, and food. Jay, our registered dietitian, works alongside our chiropractors. He starts with what we can add, not what you need to take away. You don't need to overhaul your life to feel better. You need a body that's ready for the changes to stick.

If the same spot keeps tightening up no matter how well you recover, it's worth reading why tightness comes back after a massage, or our post on neck tension that keeps coming back.
